The team at LBBC loves discovering new ways to support the women of our organization. That’s why we are so thrilled to be partners with MyBCTeam, the social network for women facing breast cancer. This guest post comes from MyBCTeam co-founder, Mary Ray.
Talk to any woman impacted by breast cancer and they will all tell you it’s not easy. Even with 1 in 8 women being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, it’s not easy finding the support that best suits them. It’s not easy finding providers. It’s not easy period.
Fortunately things are changing.
We at MyBCTeam.com, the social network for women facing breast cancer, believe that when any woman is diagnosed, it should be easy for her to connect with other women just like herself. This mission is what drives our partnership with Living Beyond Breast Cancer – our ability to make the discovery of a support network easier for women living with breast cancer.
So often we see women on MyBCTeam share with one another, “ I read your story and it was my story”,“ I thought I was the only one until I read your profile.” Women come to MyBCTeam to find other women who get it – women who know this new language of breast cancer, women who know what a freshly shaved scalp feels like in the summer heat and women who can be that shoulder to lean on.
Take Lauren, for example. Lauren has a penchant for being organized, prepared, and ready to handle whatever life throws her way. So when the 26-year-old felt a lump she wasn’t ready to accept the possibilities of what it could be. At first she ignored it. Then, it grew. After a visit to the doctor, she got the call at work. It was breast cancer. Within two weeks she had a lumpectomy. Last summer, and five surgeries later, Lauren joined MyBCTeam in search of other women like her – women who knew what she has been through and goes through every day.
Whether newly diagnosed or 15 years out from cancer, women facing breast cancer can connect on MyBCTeam with women like themselves: diagnosed, busy with life, overwhelmed, scared, and just looking for life-affirming words of experience that it will be okay. So no matter where you are in your breast cancer journey, realize there are other women out there who can help.
